Teach and Learn Literacy is a volunteer program that develops teams comprised of certified English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructors, native speakers and trainees to teach English to adults and families who cannot go to learning centers due to caring for disabled or young children. Teach and Learn Literacy - TaLL introduces them to English in their homes. Currently, TaLL is focused on Syrian refugee families that the Obama administration chose from the refugee camps in Jordan and Egypt. These are the most needy of refugees: impoverished, often illiterate in Arabic, and with handicapped children.
San Diego has the largest overall refugee population in the United States, and the largest number of newly arriving Syrians. San Diegans are meeting the challenge with over 70 volunteers and growing. In two months our pupils in pilot teams have gained confidence in talking to their neighbors, helping their children with homework, finding jobs, and preparing for equivalency degrees. Be part of the force that enables us to reach out to more families.
